State Public School Enrollment Levels Off During 2008-09

SALEM – State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced today that the total number of Oregon elementary and secondary students enrolled in public schools has remained steady in the 2008-09 school year, reversing the trend of growth over the past ten years. According to counts reported by school districts, Educational Service Districts (ESDs), and State Educational Agencies, Oregon has 564,044 public school students – a decrease of 713 students (-0.1%) compared to last year’s total of 564,757. Pre-Kindergarten enrollment has been suppressed in both years since these submissions were not mandatory and therefore inconsistent.

Here are the 2008-09 enrollment figures for the state’s largest districts and the percentage change from last year:
1. Portland 45,204 (-0.5%)
2. Salem-Keizer 40,200 (+0.2%)
3. Beaverton 37,656 (-0.1%)
4. Hillsboro 20,543 (+0.7%)
5. Eugene 17,786 (-1.3%)
6. North Clackamas 17,772 (+0.7%)
7. Bend-LaPine 15,975 (+0.7%)
8. Tigard-Tualatin 12,805 (+0.3%)
9. Medford 12,252 (-1.1%)
10. Gresham-Barlow 12,207 (-0.1%)
11. Reynolds 11,436 (+3.0%)
12. Springfield 11,127 (-1.4%)
13. David Douglas 10,580 (+1.8%)

Reflecting the change in Oregon’s statewide demographics during the past few years, minority student enrollment continued to increase, while white student enrollment decreased. Multi-ethnic students accounted for the largest increase in student population, growing by 2,966 students over the last year (+22.5%). The Hispanic student population was the second largest increase, growing by 2,476 students (+2.6%).

“Today’s report illustrates the rich diversity of Oregon’s schools and challenges us to remain focused on creating success for each and every student,” Castillo said. “It is more important than ever that we provide our schools with the resources they need to help all students graduate ready for life after high school.”
